Area Details

RaniKot Fort is the world’s largest unexplored fort and a historical display of Sindh. It has come to be known as the Great Wall of Sindh and is located in the Lakki Mountains of the Kirthar range. The fort is at a distance of 30 kilometers of Sann in Jamshoro district, approximately 90 kilometers north of Hyderabad and about 262 kilometers from Karachi.
The fort is circled by four gates namely the Sann Gate, which is the entrance gate with oval pillars, the Mohan gate which is the Western gate, the Amri Gate which is the Northern fate and Shah Pir Gate is the Southern gate. The fort has a circumference of about 29 kilometers and two more fortresses are built within it, namely Meerikot Fort and Shergarh Fort. Both have 5 bastions each and were built in the early 19th century under the personal supervision of the Talpur ruler, Nawab Wali Muhammad Khan Laghari. The main RaniKot fort and the inner Meerikot have similar curved entrances and are angulated with a safe tortuous path. According to the native ideas of the art of defense, Rani Kot Fort must have been a place of great strength
. It would be a largely safe fort because of the difficulty in accessing it through a parched desert and scarcity of water of the path. Meerikot Fort has private arrangements within it as well as a water well and is located at a very safe and central place in the very heart of the RaniKot providing safety to its inhabitants which were the Talpur Mirs. The other unique structure Shergarh Fort, is a whitish stone, a unique structure located 1480 feet above the sea level. The steep climbs to Shergarh offers a catching eye view down over the whole fort and its entrance and exit point. It was perhaps used for monitoring and security purposed.
